L'Auberge du Notaire – Vielsalm
Our philosophy: a refreshingly different place to stay
Everything is refreshingly different at L'Auberge du Notaire. Its surroundings, the building itself, the guest rooms, the way we look after you, the breakfasts and the evening meals.
What really makes the Auberge refreshingly different is its "home-from-home" feeling.
People who are passionate about your comfort
L'Auberge du Notaire isn't just a bed for the night, it's your temporary home. At this former notary's house, steeped in history, we are passionate about your comfort.
We - Monique van Schijndel and Mart van der Heijden - believe that it is a refreshingly different experience to stay with people who know your name, who remember that you prefer warm milk in your tea, or that you don't like fish. People who lend you an umbrella when it's raining, and are there for you if you need assistance during the night.
The history of L'Auberge du Notaire
This unusual hotel was entirely conceived by us, from the accommodation concept to the design of the building. The style of this former notary's house, which was originally built around 1900, is unique in the Ardennes, and bears the hallmarks of Horta and the architecture of the baroque period.
This majestic building has been completely restored, inside and out. All the grandeur and cachet of the house have been preserved, and enhanced with modern touches.
L'Auberge du Notaire takes its name from the former notary, Alain Delire, who was known in Vielsalm for his love of good food and fine wine.
Chateau de Vielsalm
The monumental building has also been home to lawyers and diplomats. The building as it currently stands dates back to around 1900, although the original building probably dates back to the 17th century, when it was the home of Georges Wirotte. The nearby "cour Georges" is a reminder of the country estate which surrounded the house.
Since then, the building has had various owners, the most eminent of whom was, perhaps, the earl of the region. It was then that the house acquired the nickname "Chateau de Vielsalm". The authentic building style of that era has been preserved, and is visible externally in the "art nouveau" wrought-iron door and the richly decorated façade.

Refreshingly different: modern accommodation with historic touches
The stately wooden staircase leads up to the guest rooms on the floors above. Each of our guest rooms is named after its former function, so you might stay in the "Notary's Room", "The Table Tennis Room" or "The Archive".
Guests at L'Auberge du Notaire sleep in rooms with original, wooden floors. Historic details, such as original fireplaces, round corner cabinets, old encyclopaedias and a Remington typewriter, are combined with modern elements to stylish effect.
In one room, you will find a Rietveld chair and in another, a bureau which used to belong to the notary. The result is a contemporary yet timeless feel. We decided not to put televisions in the rooms. After all, you come to us to be spoiled and to enjoy our region in all its facets.
Even the walls are special!
The rooms are light and spacious, and each one is unique. The walls are painted with horizontal and vertical stripes, phrases such as "Bonne Nuit" and "Bonne Journée" or even a poem.
All the rooms have been designed with comfort in mind. The beds are of a very high quality and each room has its own, spacious and well-equipped bathroom. All have a bathroom with shower, washbasin and toilet, and some look out over the gardens or to the distant hills of the Ardennes.
